THE APPEALS
OF OUR LADY
APPARITIONS
AND
MARIAN SHRINES
IN THE WORLD
Apparition of the Virgin Mary at PONTEVEDRA and TUY
SPAIN, 1925-1926-1929
he apparitions that Lucia of Fatima had afterwards are primarily enlightenments and guidance
to understand and promote the message. In particular during the message of July 13 of 1917,
Our Lady had said: "I will come to ask for the consecration of Russia to my Immaculate
Heart and for the Reparatory Communion on the First Saturdays of five consecutive
months". In two letters of 1930 to her spiritual director, Sister Lucia closely connects the reparatory
devotion of the First 5 Saturdays to the consecration of Russia.
When Lucia became a Dorothean Sister, the Virgin Mary appeared to her again in Spain (on December
10, 1925, on February 15, 1926, in the Convent of Pontevedra and on the night of June 13-14, 1929 in the
Convent of Tuy) asking for the devotion of the first five Saturdays for five consecutive months. On December
10, 1925, in the house of the Dorothean Sisters at Pontevedra, the Blessed Virgin appeared to Sister Lucia
with the Child Jesus at her side on a luminous cloud. Placing a hand on Lucia's shoulder, Our Lady showed
her a Heart surrounded by thorns, which she held in her other hand. The Child Jesus, pointing to it,
exhorted the visionary with these words: "Have compassion of the Heart of your Blessed Mother;
which is covered with the thorns that ungrateful people stick there every moment, without
anyone making an act of reparation to remove them". Our Lady added: "Look, my daughter,
at my Heart surrounded with thorns that ungrateful people drive in me with blasphemies
and ingratitude every moment. At least you seek to console me. I promise to assist at the
hour of their death, with all the graces necessary for the salvation of their souls, all those
who for five months, on the first Saturday, will go to Confession, receive Holy Communion,
recite a Rosary, keep me company for fifteen minutes, and meditate the fifteen mysteries
of the Rosary with the intention of alleviating my suffering". Lucia did not understand why five
and not nine Saturdays, or seven, in honor of the sorrows of the Virgin Mary. Our Lord subsequently
explains to her: "My daughter, the reason is simple, there are five kinds of offenses and
blasphemies to the Immaculate Heart of Mary:
1. The blasphemies against her Immaculate Conception;
2. Against her virginity;
3. Against her divine maternity, with the refusal of recognizing her as Mother of humanity;
4. Those who publicly try to instill in the heart of children indifference, disdain and even
hatred towards this Immaculate Mother;
5. Those who outrage her directly in her images".
The importance of this practice is further detailed: "The moment has come when God asks the
Holy Father to make the consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart, in union with
all the bishops of the world, promising to save Russia by this means. The souls that the
justice of God condemns for the sins committed against me are so numerous, that I come
to ask for reparation. Make sacrifices for this intention and pray".
Later, by means of an intimate communication, Our Lord lamented to me: "They did not want to listen
to my request! ... Like the king of France, they will repent of it and they will do it, but it
will be late. Russia will have already spread its errors in the world causing wars and
persecutions against the Church: The Holy Father will have to suffer much".
It was at Tuy that the promise of Our Lady contained in the Secret of July 13, 1917 was kept: "I will
come to ask for the consecration of Russia....".
Sister Lucia describes the message in this way:
"(June 13, 1929). I had requested and obtained the permission from my superiors and from my confessor,
to spend a holy hour between 11 PM and midnight from Thursday to Friday of each week. One night, being
by myself, I knelt near the railing in the middle of the chapel, where Communion was to be received to
recite the prayers of the Angelus, while lying prostrate... feeling tired, I got up and continued to recite
them, keeping my arms in the shape of a cross. The only light was coming from a lamp [of the Sanctuary].
Suddenly, the entire chapel was lit up by a supernatural light, and on the altar appeared a Cross of light
that reached up to the roof. On the upper part of the Cross in clearer light, the face of a man with the body
down to the waist could be seen [the eternal Father], on his chest there was a dove of light, and nailed to
the cross there was the body of another man. A little below his waist, suspended in the air there were a
chalice and a large Host onto which some drops of blood were falling from the face of the Crucified and
from a wound of his side. Running down the Host, these drops were falling into the chalice. Below the right
arm of the cross there was the Virgin Mary (she was Our Lady of Fatima with her Immaculate Heart in
her left hand, without sword or roses, but with a crown of thorns and flames).. Below the left arm of the
cross] several large letters, like crystalline water flowing on the altar, formed these words: 'Grace and
Mercy'. I understood that the mystery of the Most Holy Trinity was shown to me, and I received
enlightenments regarding this mystery that I am not permitted to reveal. Then Our Lady said to me: "The
moment has come when God asks the Holy Father to make the consecration of Russia to
my Immaculate Heart, in union with all the bishops of the world, promising to save Russia
by this means. The souls that the Justice of God condemns for the sins committed against
me are so numerous that I come to ask for reparation: make sacrifices for this intention
and pray'. I recounted what happened to my confessor, who ordered me to put into writing what Our
Lord wanted to be done. The request of Tuy stood out especially for the role that the Bishops of the Church,
and above all the Holy Father, would have had in the plan of God for peace. The faithful had been instructed
from the apparitions of Fatima on their obligation of prayer and sacrifice. At Tuy, however, the primary
responsibility for future peace was given to the Pope: 'God requests that the Holy Father makes...'.
In 1917 the Holy Father had asked the Blessed Virgin Mary to obtain peace in the world, and she, as a
good mother, had quickly agreed, but under the condition that the Holy Father and the Church would
faithfully cooperate with her plan."
